The Do’s and Don’ts of Using a Microphone Like a Pro
You’ve got the message.
You’ve got the stage.
Now make sure your audience can actually hear you clearly.
In public speaking, your voice is your main instrument—and the microphone is your amplifier. Using it correctly can make or break your presentation.
Here’s how to handle a mic like a pro 👇
🚫 MICROPHONE DON’Ts
1️⃣ Don’t Beat or Tap the Mic to “Test” It
👉 It’s not a drum.
Tapping or hitting the mic creates unpleasant feedback and sounds unprofessional. Instead, speak into it gently to check volume.
2️⃣ Don’t Hold It Too Close or Too Far
👉 Holding it too close makes your voice sound distorted or muffled.
👉 Holding it too far makes your voice fade out.
🎯 Keep it about 2–3 inches from your mouth at all times.
3️⃣ Don’t Hold the Lower End
👉 That’s often where the antenna or wireless connection is.
Covering it can interfere with the signal.
Hold the mic comfortably in the middle or upper shaft.
✅ MICROPHONE DO’s
1️⃣ Slide the Switch All the Way
👉 If it has an on/off switch, make sure it’s fully switched on before speaking.
Halfway settings can cut your sound mid-speech.
2️⃣ Hold It Adjacent to Your Mouth
👉 Position the mic just beside your mouth, not directly in front.
This reduces the risk of breath pops or “P” blasts into the mic.
3️⃣ Switch Hands While Speaking
👉 Especially when gesturing, alternate hands holding the mic to stay expressive and natural.
This keeps you animated and connected to the audience.
🎯 BONUS TIP
🚫 Don’t Point the Mic Toward Nearby Speakers
👉 This causes that annoying screeching feedback you often hear at events.
Always aim the mic away from speakers and monitors.
🎤 Final Thought
A microphone is a tool of power—when used right.
It’s not about shouting louder, but about communicating better.
With these mic-handling habits, you’ll sound clear, confident, and professional every time you step up to speak.
