3 Smart Ways to Stay Confident When You Don’t Know the Answer
Even the most seasoned speakers face it:
A tough question from the audience… and your mind goes blank. 😬
Don’t panic.
You don’t need to have all the answers to be a great speaker.
You just need to know how to respond with confidence and credibility.
Here’s a 3-step strategy to help you handle tough questions when you don’t know the answer:
1️⃣ Throw It Back to the Audience
Sometimes the best resource is in the room.
📣 Say:
“That’s a great question. I’d love to hear what others think—does anyone in the audience have thoughts or experience with this?”
This shows humility, encourages engagement, and can even spark a meaningful discussion. It turns a moment of uncertainty into interactive learning.
2️⃣ Ask the Questioner What They Think
Flip the spotlight (politely!) and invite them to share.
📣 Say:
“I appreciate that question. Before I respond, I’m curious—what’s your take on it?”
This:
✅ Shows respect for their thinking
✅ Buys you a moment to think
✅ May lead to a solid insight you can build on
💡 It also signals confidence, not insecurity.
3️⃣ Promise to Follow Up
Be honest. Be professional. Be accountable.
📣 Say:
“I’ll be honest—I don’t have a complete answer for that right now. But I’ll do my research and get back to you.”
Then… follow through.
Take their contact or post your answer in a group/email/next session.
This builds trust and shows integrity. It’s better than guessing and possibly giving the wrong information.
🎯 Bonus Tip: Stay Calm and Smile
Audiences don’t expect perfection—they expect presence.
Smile. Breathe. Acknowledge the question with curiosity, not fear.
🧠 Final Thought
Not knowing is not a weakness.
Handling it well is a leadership skill.
Use these 3 steps to maintain your confidence, grow your credibility, and turn a tough moment into a powerful one.
