Investing in Treasury Bonds in Uganda: A Secure Path to Passive Income

Introduction: What Are Treasury Bonds?

Treasury Bonds are long-term loans you give to the Ugandan government, which then pays you interest every 6 months until the bond matures (between 2 and 20 years). It’s one of the safest investments available, backed by the Government of Uganda — which has never defaulted on these payments since 1969.

Why Should You Invest?

Meet five friends: Apuuli, Akiiki, Araali, Amooti, and Attenyi — each with a different financial goal:

  • Apuuli wants to build long-term passive income.
  • Akiiki is saving for her child’s university tuition in 10 years.
  • Araali wants a low-risk investment after retiring.
  • Amooti is an entrepreneur looking for collateral for a loan.
  • Attenyi simply wants a smarter alternative to a fixed deposit.

They all found their solution in Treasury Bonds.

How Do Treasury Bonds Work?

Here’s what happens when you invest:

  1. You invest your money through a commercial bank.
  2. The Government borrows and uses it for national development.
  3. You receive interest every six months.
  4. You get back your full investment at the end of the term.

You can invest from UGX 100,000 upwards.
