🧘 The Shortcut to Overcoming Nerves & Anxiety in Any Situation

(Especially Public Speaking!) 🎤

Do your palms sweat before you speak?
Does your heart race before a high-stakes meeting or performance?
You’re not alone—and you’re not powerless.

In fact, the most effective tool you have to manage nervousness is right under your nose.
Literally.

Your breath controls your body. And when you control your breath, you control your nerves.

This is Tip #7 and the final installment in our Fear of Public Speaking Series for 2024 — and it’s all about Mastering Your Breath.

🎯 Why Breath Matters in Public Speaking

When you’re anxious, your body goes into “fight or flight” mode. Your breathing becomes shallow, your heart pounds, and your brain floods with adrenaline. That’s why your hands shake, your voice trembles, and your mind goes blank.

But here’s the good news:

Breathing is the fastest way to reset your nervous system.

Calm your breath, and you calm your heartbeat.
Calm your heartbeat, and you calm your entire body.

Let’s dive into three simple techniques to help you regain control and confidence—before any speech, pitch, or pressure situation.

🔹 1. Regular Breathing Exercises (Build the Habit Daily)

Practicing deep breathing every day helps you stay naturally calm when it matters most.

Try this:
✅ Inhale slowly through your nose for 10 seconds
✅ Exhale gently through your mouth for 10 seconds
✅ Repeat this for 5–10 cycles

Bonus: Use belly breathing—let your stomach rise as you inhale and fall as you exhale. This activates your parasympathetic nervous system (a fancy way of saying it makes you calm).

🔹 2. Count Your Breaths (Great at the Podium!)

When you’re standing in front of an audience and anxiety creeps in, use this grounding technique:

✅ Inhale and silently count “1”
✅ Exhale and count “2”
✅ Inhale again—“3,” and so on…

Or simply repeat:
Inhale—1. Exhale—2. Inhale—1. Exhale—2.

This not only calms your body but keeps your mind from spiraling.

🔹 3. Play with Your Toes (Seriously!)

Yes—it sounds silly, but it works.

When seated before your speech or meeting:
✅ Lift your big toe, then the next, one at a time
✅ Wiggle all your toes slowly
✅ Focus your mind on that sensation

Why this works:

It distracts your brain from overthinking, reconnects you to your body, and subtly relaxes your nerves.

✨ Bonus Tip: Slow Down Your Speaking Pace

Once you’re at the podium or in front of your audience:

  • Pause intentionally.
  • Speak slightly slower than normal.
  • Breathe between sentences.

You’ll look more confident—and feel more in control.
And your audience will actually listen more closely.

🚀 Wrapping Up: The End of Our 2024 Series

This marks the final tip in our 2024 Fear of Public Speaking series.

I hope these insights have helped you:

  • Step onto the stage with less fear,
  • Deliver your message with more clarity,
  • And connect with others through confident communication.

Because great speakers aren’t born—they’re trained, and they breathe through it.
