A Beginner’s Guide to Investing in Unit Trusts in Uganda

What are Unit Trusts?

A Unit Trust is a type of collective investment scheme that pools money from multiple investors and invests it in a diversified portfolio — including treasury bills, bonds, real estate, and the stock market. These funds are managed by licensed fund managers, making it one of the simplest and safest ways to start investing in Uganda.

Think of it like a “chama” for your money — only this time, experts handle it professionally.

Why Consider Unit Trusts?

  1. Low Capital Requirement – Start with as little as UGX 10,000
  2. Daily Compounding Interest – Returns range from 10–12% annually
  3. Flexible Investment Goals – Save for short-term or long-term needs
  4. Easy Withdrawal – Access your money in 3 to 72 hours

Step-by-Step: How to Start Investing in Unit Trusts in Uganda

Step 1: Choose a Fund Manager

There are three main types of fund managers:

  • Banks: Stanbic Bank, Standard Chartered
  • Insurance Companies: UAP Old Mutual, Sanlam, Britam, ICEA
  • Investment Companies: XENO (Tech-enabled, mobile-first)

Choose one based on convenience, trust, app usability, or fees.

Step 2: Register an Investment Account

Here’s how to register depending on the type of fund manager:

Step 3: Start Small, Grow Steady

Minimum amounts vary:

  • XENO: UGX 10,000
  • Stanbic Bank: UGX 100,000 to start, UGX 50,000 recurring
  • UAP/ICEA/Britam: UGX 100,000 minimum

You can choose:

  • 🗓️ Daily contributions
  • 📅 Weekly or Monthly savings
  • 💼 One-time Lumpsum Investment

Step 4: Track Your Returns

Most fund managers offer mobile dashboards to track your balance and interest. Returns are calculated and added daily — compounding interest increases the total return every single day!

Step 5: Withdraw When Ready

Need your money? You can withdraw your funds with:

  • Banks & XENO: 1–3 days
  • Insurance companies: 3–5 business days

Make sure to plan ahead if you need urgent liquidity.
